This is an issue I’m pretty committed to, and sadly I think about a month too late on (Mr. Steel feel free to comment). The farm subsidy program in this country is a total disaster. Huge enormous amounts of money go to farmers (and actually to corporations as well) to support the production of crops we don’t really need, while small to mid-size farmers who want to care for the environment and the people they feed struggle to make a living. The above map is a great example, it shows recipients of farm subsidies in Manhattan. Sadly I think this legislation which comes up every 5 years just more or less got renewed, but I could be wrong. Yes, I think farm subsidies are a problem. But keeping enough farmers farming to feed the country in the event of a catastrophic crop failure is a valuable strategic resource.
Yes, local agriculture is neat. But until the entire world has enough to eat, I think economies of scale in food production should be used.
