A few weeks ago in class we were discussing why nerds (we might have said something like “science people” but we all meant nerds) used their free time to build silly things like ohhh I don’t know, robotic beer launching refrigerators. I brought up my friend from college who apparently had built some sort of wii guitar. There was widespread scoff-age at the idea of some sort of nerdy faux-guitar, and knowing my friend was not scoffworthy I could only defend him with stories of having seen him play the solo from freebird behind his head. But now I’ve been vindicated! Turns out he used a wii controller as an effects controller, with different button pushes or guitar movements leading to different effects. The actual guitar was left intact to be played with his rock god-like abilities.

In case you were looking for more sport science like my last post you can check it out here. They do a lot of good stuff and a fair bit of goofiness (like testing the myth about boxers having sex before fights).

Clearly I will some day make an art project about this phenomenon.

This video’s up on the New Yorker website in collaboration with an article from last weeks mag about elevators. Its time lapse footage from the elevators where a man was trapped for 41 hours. That’s right, 41 hours.

Tacita Dean’s piece on the Kodak film factory in France is up on Ubuweb. Its worth a look if you haven’t seen it, even though I think watching it on the web sort of defeats the purpose. The purpose being that its a movie shot on the same Kodak film that’s produced in the factory that it shows, a factory which is being closed. If you haven’t spend some time on Ubu its definitely worth a half day of looking around, they have everything from Baldessari singing Sol Lewitt, to Hollis Framptons Nostalgia.

This is a great blog collecting, as you’d expect, photoshop disasters that happen out there in the world. There are a good few hours of entertainment to be had.
